Getting physically as well as mentally healthy in a holistic way is an important part of the drug rehab process.

This time of year, it’s hard to stay healthy while the flu and common cold are running rampant. But there are some non-pharmaceutical things you can do to help keep your immune system running at optimum capacity.

U.S. News suggests the following six ways to safeguard yourself against illness:

1. Reduce stress

Chronic stress negatively affects your immune system and your metabolism. Find an effective way to reduce stress, such as yoga or other exercise, meditation, writing in a journal or taking a hot bath.

2. Get more sleep.

If you don’t sleep at least seven hours per night on a regular basis, your probability of getting sick triples. Your body repairs itself itself while you’re sleeping.

3. Get some vitamin D

Vitamin D strengthens the immune system and is full of antimicrobials that attack viruses and bacteria. You can get all you need by spending at least 10 to 15 minutes a day in the sun.

4. Try eucalyptus oil

Put eucalyptus oil in an aromatherapy diffuser, or make a eucalyptus steam bath by mixing a cup of boiling water 10 drops of the oil, then inhaling it deeply for five to 10 minutes.

5. Eliminate sugar from your diet

Sugar suppresses your immune system and encourages the growth of viruses and bacteria.

Replace junk food with grass-fed meats, organic dairy products and fresh fruits and vegetables.

6. Take echinacea

Echinacea stimulates the immune system and helps relieve aches and pains. You can make echinacea tea or take it in tablet form.
