The Vice President of India promoted the practice of holistic yoga at an anniversary celebration last week, calling it “a holistic approach to well-being.”

Vice President Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu spoke at a celebration honoring 100 years of the Yoga Institute of Mumbai last week. Naidu said,“Yoga connects physical health with mental equilibrium and emotional tranquility; it promotes concentration and focused attention,” the Deccan Herald reported.

The vice president pointed out that holistic yoga has beneficial physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions. He noted that the sage Patanjali, who compiled the first yoga philosophy, defines yoga as the ability to control random thoughts and achieve a stillness, calmness and inner harmony.

He said holistic yoga is not a narrow, religious practice as some believe, but is a practice that builds on ethical principles that everyone should follow: non-violence, truthfulness, honesty and fidelity.

Naidu congratulated the Yoga Institute for a century of service training yoga instructors and providing “excellent services to humanity.”

Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu took office as vice president of India in August 2017. He previously served as Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Urban Development and Information and Broadcasting in the Modi Cabinet.
